Some big growth numbers are coming out of Dubai International Airport. DIA is reporting a 19.6% increase in cargo traffic for April. Year-to-date, cargo grew 24.6% to 715,628 tons compared to April 2009.

Is this growth sustainable? Is the growth just a function of better fundamentals in the global economy or is Dubai doing something special?

They sure hope it's something special, because the new airport they're opening next month is designed to handle 12 million tonnes of freight annually.
DXB just released its May traffic stats, which make the April growth look puny. The airport's May handle was up 32% to 195,000 tonnes, and the y-t-d handle is up 27% to 917,000 tonnes. I think the "low" increase in April was partly a function of the shutdown of European airspace for a week.
DXB just reported its August cargo handle up 21.5% y-o-y. This is the eleventh consecutive month of double-digit increases in cargo volume. For the year-to-date through August DXB's handle was up 25.0% to 1.5 million tonnes.

I don't know what the long-term future holds, but it appears that Dubai has managed to sustain a high rate of growth in cargo volume in the four months since JJ asked his original question.
